Important story from @dpcarrington theguardian.com/environment/20…
I wrote an article on why Environment Agency ‘pollution incidents’ are very different metrics to ‘pollution’ theconversation.com/no-wonder-engl…
“England’s privatised water industry may one day be considered a textbook case study of failed corporate responsibility, regulation and governance.” theconversation.com/no-wonder-engl…
Britain’s regulation of PFAS chemicals is ‘slow’, ‘limited and fragmented’, which could lead to ‘further environmental problems as more chemicals are released to the environment’, the chair of the Office for Environmental Protection has warned. endsreport.com/article/192635…
We are concluding our investigation into the regulation of combined sewer overflows as significant progress has been made to address failures to comply with environmental law it found – read more 👉bit.ly/4f7aWaj
Scotland’s waterbodies are already at a consistently high quality at around 87% - much higher than in England and Wales. But there’s always room for improvement.
Still a bit puzzled as to which metric @SteveReedMP is using when stating several times on TV that sewage pollution is worse in Scotland than England. Can you help @DefraGovUK ? @JonahFisherBBC @krishgm @adamvaughan_uk @horton_official @sandralaville @WATERSHED_i
Interesting to hear by which metric Steve Reed is using to say water pollution is worse under nationalised Scottish water compared to privitised English water companies.
“I'm not going to focus on ideology." It would cost £100bn to nationalise water companies and the government would have to take that money from the NHS and education, Environment Secretary Steve Reed tells @krishgm
If you here today that water bills in the UK have been low compared to the rest of Europe then read this thread. I've heard many reporters follow the industry line that the issue have come from not being able to put up bills. 👇 #cunliffe #sewage
In a interview I did a few weeks back I was told by the interviewer that the UK had enjoyed artificially cheap water rates compared to the rest of Europe but it turns out that wasn’t exactly true. Source smartwatermagazine.com/news/locken/wa…
#cunliffe is wrong when he implies privatisation improved the water quality in the UK on @BBCRadio4 . The EU Urban Wastewater Directive improved water quality across Europe including the UK. Privatisation just happened at a similar time.
