That one time I got to read a signal log from VICTORY, dated 1804, while cross-referencing a period signal book… Spine-chilling stuff. The past felt so close. #HMSVictory #SignalHistory #RoyalNavy #AgeOfSail.

Captured French ships prepare to sail for England under Rear Admiral Sir James Saumarez, 1801. A bustling Royal Navy dockyard scene filled with sailors, marines, and farewells victory, logistics, and emotion all in one frame. 🇬🇧⚓ #NavalHistory #RoyalNavy #AgeOfSail

I’m 40 If I’m lucky, I have 2,000 weeks left. At most, that’s how many books I can read in my remaining time here. That’s so few books Stop putting it off and grab that book you’ve always wanted to read

Another lovely letter this one from Capt. Durham to Their Lords, noting an officer unfit for further sea service. I could spend all day reading these glimpses into the past. There's so much life between the lines. "Your humble obedient servant" #NavalHistory #AgeOfSail
Flicking through some 1799 Captain’s letters and found this gem—a flag officer’s set of signals. These were issued locally to captains before standardised fleet-wide signals came into use. A great glimpse into pre-1800 naval comms! #SignalHistory #AgeOfSail

Hey, @grok, who was the most famous person to visit my profile? It doesn't need to be a mutual, don't tag them, just say who it was. o7
Still can't believe I'm allowed to handle these items let alone read them! Original signal book from 1795.

Not a bad trip down here today was dreading another long drive this week. We're you even at the TNA if you don't have the obligatory picture.

📜 Spotted this in an 1805 signal reference… What do we think this says? "Topmainhead"? Can’t find it on any rigging diagrams so far — maybe a period-specific way of describing a mast position? Signal nerds, thoughts? #1805Signals #SignalHistory #RoyalNavy #NelsonEra…

Just locked in the name for my signal flag project: "Reviving The Trafalgar Signal" 🎌 Now tweaking the flag sizes down to a more manageable Size 4… still not sure I’ll get them hoisted on Victory, but we’re getting closer! #TrafalgarSignal #1805Flags #MaritimeHistory…
I wonder just how much trouble I'd get into if a rig something like this appeared in my back garden 😁 Asking for a friend of course! #StoneFrigate #SignalHistory

Have to say massive thanks to the team at @HMS_Collingwood. The original plan was the hoist Signal 16 on the base's main mast but some technical issues stopped that. Ended up explaining 1805 signals to the current class of trainees, also got called a Historian 😁
Not a bad day, having a look around @HMS_Collingwood & talking signaling.
Well it's that time of year again. Happy Birthday to us both 🥳🧁
⚓ #OnThisDay - 23 July 1759: HMS Victory was laid down at Chatham Dockyard Designed by Sir Thomas Slade as a 100-gun first-rate ship of the line. Built from 6,000 oaks, she became the pride of the Royal Navy & remains a powerful symbol of naval heritage bit.ly/4i4C9er

On this day in 1757 Alexander Ball was born. Ball went on to achieve the rank of Rear-Admiral in the Royal Navy. He is best remembered for his actions during the Battle Of The Nile (1798), the Siege of Malta (1798 -1800) and being Civil Commissioner of Malta from 1802-1809.
Off down to @HMS_Collingwood tomorrow to hopefully fly my large 1805 signal flags! Going to be a long day but should be a fun one 😄
