The remarkable Gadeer Kamal-Mreeh (@GadeerMreeh) explains the situation of Syria's Druze at @perry_dan's Ask Questions Later (danperry.substack.com): She watched in horror as Oct. 7 just replayed itself in Suweida: “The same sick, barbaric methods — kidnapping women on…
Fernando Pinilla (@FMPinilla) on @ZohranMamdani's inner thoughts.

An #Azerbaijani MA thesis compares #BernardLewis and me, concluding that we both "continue to shape how the U.S. understands the Middle East and Islam. Their ideas don’t just stay in academic books—they influence media, think tanks, and foreign policy." dspace.khazar.org/bitstream/20.5…

Ariel Kahana (@arik3000) makes a compelling case that Israel has acted too aggressive toward Ahmed al-Sharaa and the new government in Damascus. Yes, be suspicious and wary, but give him a chance to prove himself not a jihadist and Erdoğan's agent. israelhayom.com/2025/07/18/isr…
So many post-Oct. 7 analyses have appeared, maybe too many. But @GreggRoman's is exceptional. He calls for a #PaxIsraeliana: "a statement of fact, forged in the fires of Gaza, proven in the skies over Iran, now written into the soil of a shattered Syria." meforum.org/the-peace-of-t…
In an article today at @MEForum, I explain the fighting in #Syria as basically a clash between the country's neighbors: "While Syrians are the main protagonists, they effectively serve as proxies for Ankara and Jerusalem." I.e., Sharaa hardly counts. danielpipes.org/22627/the-mome…
.@MSoghom: Iran's stunningly incompetent government "has declared a shutdown for Tehran on July 23, 2025, to save electricity and water. … How such a move is supposed to alleviate the deepening water and power crises remains unclear." meforum.org/mef-observer/i…
Amazingly, Alberto M. Fernandez points out, the great #Druze revolt against French rule began precisely a century ago today, on July 21, 1925. This "long-lasting anti-imperialist revolt … would have a lasting regional impact." He also notes continuities between then and now.
My latest at @MEMRIReports just out today, is about a Druze anniversary a century ago and current events assailing that same community right now. Likely to offend somebody. memri.org/reports/druze-…
The brilliant Hussein Aboubakr Mansour captures modern Middle Eastern history in a single sentence: "[Hegel's] Philosophy of History, not Abbasid scholasticism, is the true worldview of the modern Arabs, and revolution, not Islam, is their main organizing principle."

We've long known that #MAGA is preposterous, but who ever imagined it could become quite so absurd as the obsession with #JeffreyEpstein reveals? washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/…

Historical curiosity: When #RichardNixon escaped Watergate-obsessed Washington in June 1974, he visited Damascus, where he had the privilege of meeting an 8-year-old Bashar al-Assad (front, 2nd from right).

.@JoelSGilbert lists some of @TheDemocrats who are “red diaper babies,” i.e., children raised by Communist or other radical leftist parents: — Barack Obama — Kamala Harris — Pete Buttigieg — Jamie Raskin — David Axelrod — Zohran Mamdani Notice a pattern? thegatewaypundit.com/2025/07/born-r…
The Six-Day War of 1967 and the Twelve-Day War of 2025 share one notable fact: that of Israel's stunning, overwhelming tactical victory. One major difference: The Arab state losers in 1967 could not stop squealing, while the Islamic Republic of Iran is nearly completely silent.

.@NYTimes: "The Israeli military said it had attacked the Syrian military’s … main command center, where it said Syrian commanders were directing and overseeing government forces in Sweida. Syria’s defense ministry is housed in the same complex." I have an uneasy feeling of…

.@KhaledAbuToameh on Hamas & PIJ: "Many Arabs seem to like starting wars—such as the war of 1948, when five Arab armies invaded Israel on the day of its independence, and which they now call the nakba (catastrophe)—but then get angry when they lose them." gatestoneinstitute.org/21751/palestin…
A senior Israeli military official, speaking on war day #649: Israel's "main achievement is primarily in the dismantling of Hamas as a military organization. It currently functions as a guerrilla organization. Its capabilities are guerrilla capabilities.” jns.org/hamas-does-not…
Decoding Trump's policy vis-à-vis the Ukraine war (which has major implications for Iran, Gaza, and beyond): 1. He was always perfectly aware that Putin started the war. 2. He pretended otherwise (think the Oval Office meeting with Zelensky) to win influence and convince Putin…

In the spirit of #RadioFreeEurope, #RadioLiberty, and the other Cold War broadcasts, the U.S. government should provide gratis satellite Internet connections for everyone living under totalitarian rule, starting with the North Koreans, Chinese, Russians, Iranians, and…

#BertrandRussell: "War does not determine who is right - only who is left."
