Anger as Glasgow School of Art closes its stained glass studio and ends its classes, severing its long links with the endangered craft. My story for the @heraldscotland heraldscotland.com/news/25278417.…
This is so niche I can't believe I am asking, but does anyone know anyone who might be an expert in Protestantism in Italy during the Reformation? (Stranger things have happened). RTs welcome.
I like how, when Madonna delivers the line “I wanna make love on a train…” in 'Justify My Love', she adds “…cross-country”. Lest anyone suspect that her lover could only last the length of the 0.8-mile trip from Stourbridge Town to Stourbridge Junction.
‘This is a very fine novel, Liam McIlvanney’s best so far.’ Absolutely delighted with Allan Massie’s Scotsman review. He’s an outstanding novelist and exacting critic who had some justified strictures and misgivings regarding my last novel. So pleased he ‘gets’ The Good Father…
This is such a sensible idea. An easy task for each prison housing short-term prisoners to use AI to create a list based upon earliest release dates - remove the violent ones - then release them as required to keep the numbers below the prescribed limit @howardleague_sc 👍

This could be the most exciting thing I’ve found in quite a while. Last week I found a Tudor shoe and inside it was this scrap of fabric. 1/ #mudlarking #mudlarkingfinds #mudlark
I've been doing more travel writing for The Times. This one is about Leonard Cohen's Montreal. It's pegged to new direct Air Canada flights from Edinburgh-Montreal this summer. thetimes.com/article/871f63…
Another brilliant line-up of events, now in our 9th year - the BEST (though I say it myself) wee Festival in the country. Featuring the Carnival Parade, Street Music Festival, The Govanhill Book Festival with walks, talks, meals and gigs. Something for everyone (except bigots).
We’re thrilled to announce the 2025 Govanhill International Festival & Carnival programme is live! Join us for an anti-racist celebration of creativity, solidarity & community. govanhillbaths.com/festival Celebrate its 9th year, louder, prouder and more rooted in our neighbourhood.
Another poor but predictable decision in the onslaught of the Scottish cultural landscape. #stainedglass #glasgow #scotland

Absolutely delighted to see The Good Father on the McIlvanney longlist in the company of all these outstanding books…
The McIlvanney Prize longlist has five former Debut Prize shortlistees and four previous winners on it - The winner will be announced on 12th September - bloodyscotland.com/event/bloody-s… Congratulations all!
Saddening read by @DaniGaravelli1 in @heraldscotland on the closure of @GSofA stained glass course = frustrating when it’s a traditional skill at risk. @GlasgowHeritage will be soon be funding a major stained glass conservation project to address this 👀👇 heraldscotland.com/news/25278417.…
Glasgow School of Art ends its long history of stained glass excellence. Sad news. Article by @DaniGaravelli1 ( paywalled ). heraldscotland.com/news/25278417.…
Great article by @DaniGaravelli1. It should serve as a 'wake up call'... 👍. Herald, 29/06/2025 - Page 10 edition.pagesuite.com/html5/reader/p…
Okay here goes: 11 years ago today our daughter Grace was stillborn, 2 weeks before her due date. It was devastating. Stillbirth is damaging beyond words. So I'm leaving the BBC next month to go and work for Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death society.
It is the Feast of David the Dendrite who got so weary of ceaseless chatter he went to live in an almond tree.
An honour to have been a part of the judging panel for the Orwell Prize for Political Writing We read so many incredible books but Amelina’s stood out from the very first pages. It’s raw, powerful and original She was a true heir to Orwell the novelist and Orwell the journalist
Victoria Amelina, killed by a Russian bomb in Ukraine on 1 July 2023, has posthumously won the 2025 Orwell Prize for Political Writing for Looking at Women, Looking at War. "An unforgettable picture of the human consequences of war." Kim Darroch, Chair of Judges @WmCollinsBooks
