The fact that Mary I was technically queen consort of Spain from 1556 is easily forgotten!
Who could have guessed a post about a Flemish guy who drew Stonehenge in the 16th c. would be so popular.

#OTD in 1568, Don Carlos heir to the Spanish Empire died in mysterious circumstances. Considered mentally instable he was imprisoned by his dad, Philip II, earlier. Philip assumed Don Carlos was planning to take over the Habsburg Netherlands.

And the first drawing of Stonehenge was made by a man from Ghent, Lucas de Heere, in 1573.

It always amazes me there are a million series about the Tudors (don't get me wrong, love those as I'm a Tudor buff), but only a handfull about the Habsburgs, you know the dynasty that ran half the globe at some point.

#OTD in 1478, Philip the Handsome, s. of Mary of Burgundy and Maximilian of Habsburg was born at the Prinsenhof Palace in Bruges. Nobody could have expected his marriage to a Castilian princess would alter the course of European history.

During the parade for Belgium's National Day today, several #WWII veterans joined to watch the proceedings. The lady in blue is a former member of the Belgian resistance who lost her brother during the war.

#OTD in 1831, King Leopold I of the Belgians was inaugurated in Brussels. He took the constitution oath after which he was invited to ascend the throne.


#OTD in 1831, Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg und Gotha was spending his last day as a mere prince. The following day he would become a king.

19 July 1553. Mary I, daughter of Henry VIII, was proclaimed Queen of England and Ireland ending the 9-day claim of Lady Jane Grey. Mary’s best known for her brutal policy of reversing the Reformation and restoring Catholicism, which led to her being dubbed “Bloody Mary”.
At some point in the 16th c. Brussels was thé royal capital of Europe: at one point an emperor, a king (and emperor-elect), two widow-queen-consorts and crown prince had their residence there.
