Housing, Communities & Local Government Committee
@CommonsHCLG
We're a cross-party group of @HouseOfCommons MPs working together to scrutinise @MHCLG and its associated bodies. See what we're working on 👇
The broken link between tax and service quality is leading to growing dissatisfaction and risks undermining trust in local democracy. We're calling on the Government to address the financial crisis in local government and give councils more power to control their own affairs.
As we heard at our recent evidence session on property management companies, action is long overdue to address concerns around excessive service charges, poor communication and unresolved maintenance problems. We will be keeping a close watch on the Government’s progress.
Leaseholders across the country are at the mercy of opaque and unaffordable service charges and unscrupulous managing agents. Today, Labour is acting to protect leaseholders from service charge abuse and ensure landlords and managing agents are robustly held to account.
We've written to @AngelaRayner and to McCarthy Stone to follow up on issues raised at our recent evidence session on housing for older people, including concerns about the level of information available to buyers on service charges.
My question to the Prime Minister earlier this afternoon 👇🏾
With spending on temporary accommodation and other pressures pushing some councils to breaking point, @FloEshalomi asked the Prime Minister whether he believes we need an urgent reset in local government funding.

Have your say until 29 August on the @CommonsHCLG select committee new inquiry into the affordability of home ownership 👇🏾
We've launched an inquiry into the affordability of home ownership in England. We'll look at the barriers for first-time buyers, the effectiveness of Government support schemes and whether existing routes to affordable home ownership are providing genuinely affordable homes.

From mould and damp to overcrowding and poor insulation, too many people in England suffer from appalling housing conditions. We've launched an inquiry to examine the condition of homes and how we can improve them.
Our Chair,@FloEshalomi, has responded to the Government's announcement on social and affordable housing renewal.
We questioned McCarthy Stone about concerns over the treatment of older people in its business model.
We have written to FirstPort and Rendall & Rittner about the transparency of fees and their handling of complaints, following our evidence session on property management companies.
