Cyclone Bola was crazy.
What's the first major weather event you can recall? For me, it was Cyclone Bola in 1988, when I was 7. Amazing to read about it now and discover ~900mm of rain was recorded around Gisborne in 72 hours, with 500mm recorded in the heaviest 24-hour period. nzhistory.govt.nz/page/cyclone-b…
The growth in vehicle imports to 🇳🇿 from 🇨🇳 over the past 5 years has been phenomenal. Tesla's Shanghai factory has played a big role, but Chinese brands like MG and BYD have also become popular picks for EVs and PHEVs. SUVs from Great Wall Motors (GWM) have grown quickly too.
The June Chinese trade data showed a continued acceleration of vehicle exports to New Zealand as Chinese cars/utes increasingly dominate the NZ car market. Exports to NZ are running way ahead of growth in other markets.
Opening the @SundayStarTimes and finding five more articles with butter in the headline (plus a cartoon)...
It must be a quiet news day in 🇳🇿 when this is the third top story on @1NewsNZ. (The fourth story was about shoddy pothole repairs... 😂)
A good article from The Post (paywalled) about the impact of the NZ-EU FTA. thepost.co.nz/politics/36077…
Guess when the 🇳🇿🇪🇺 free trade agreement entered into force.
This 21-day rolling view of rainfall totals in Motueka gives a clearer picture of just how unusual it was for the Tasman to receive so much rain in the span of a few weeks. Nothing else in the past 30 years comes close.
The amount of rain that fell in the Tasman region in less than 3 weeks from late June was crazy. No wonder so many homes and farms flooded. Data courtesy of @earthsciencesnz.
Select committee docs show that if today's enrolment changes weren't happening, officials were preparing to handle over 600,000 enrolment transactions during the 2026 voting period - more than four times the volume in 2014.
The enrolment changes aren’t too surprising. If recent trends had continued, more than half a million people would’ve been enrolling or updating their details during the voting period. That’d be a huge challenge for administrators and raise integrity concerns about the roll.

Free democracy sausages are proposed to be axed, alongside on-the-day enrolment and prisoner voting:

As do dairy exports - up 20% in a year...
And they just keep going up...
