In this world, whose family is without blemish? Who is free from sickness and grief? Who does not suffer grief and who is constantly happy? There is nobody. These are the bitter facts of life. In fact, grief and misery are the part and parcel of every human being.

Manners betray one’s family. Language betray one’s country. Hospitality betrays one’s love, and physique betrays one’s food intake.

Marry your daughter into a noble family and employ your son into studies, engage your friends in good deeds and involve your enemy in evil practices. [All of these constitute a 'must' job.]

Between the wicked and the snake, the snake is less evil for it stings only once, while the wicked sting on every step.

The heads of noble families never deceive anybody till their last breath. Therefore, kings prefer to keep them in their courts. They are the most reliable persons.

At the time of the pralaya (universal destruction) the oceans are to exceed their limits and seek to change, but a saintly man never changes.

Excessive beauty caused Sita to be abducted, excessive arrogance caused Ravan’s death and excessive charitable disposition caused the king Bali to be duped. Excess of everything is always harmful.

Nothing is too heavy for the strong, no place is too far away for a trader, no land is a foreign land for a scholar, and no one is a stranger for a man with a sweet tongue. [Nothing is impossible for a competent person. He can overcome all difficulties in way of his progress]

Just as one well blossomed and sweet smelling flower is enough to turn the whole garden fragrant, one worthy son is enough to bring glory to the whole family. [It is not the quantity but the quality that counts everywhere.]

One wise, educated, and worthy son is better than a hundred incompetent and useless sons. The moon is capable of destroying darkness, which even thousands of stars fail to achieve. [It is the duty of a wise man to make his son worthy and scholarly.]

It is of no use to produce many sons who cause worry and sorrow. Only one worthy son is enough who may support the whole family.

Bring up your son with affection till he is five years of age, then be strict with him for the next ten years, and when a son attains the age of sixteen, start treating him like a friend.

One who manages to escape at the time of riots [or a foreign invasion] or runs away from a fearful calamity, a terrible famine, and also from the company of evil men is safe and can survive. No one should stay at these places.
