LABORATORY OF DIVERSITY AND EVOLUTION OF ANAEROBIC PROTISTS We study the diversity and evolution of anaerobic protists at Faculty of Science, Charles University
New preprint from our lab: “Rare microbial relict sheds light on an ancient eukaryotic supergroup” by Marek Valt et al. introduces Solarion arienae, an interesting protist from newly characterized supergroup. Read the full preprint 👉 doi.org/10.21203/rs.3.…
Happy to see this out!
Symbiont-housing structures are rarely studied in unicellular protists. Jerlström-Hultqvist et al. show that low-oxygen-adapted Anaeramoebae have symbiosomes positioning sulfate-reducing bacteria near hydrogenosomes. @jon_hultqvist @andrewjroger nature.com/articles/s4146…
A new paper out!
It was a pleasure to be part of this project and happy to see it published in the @ISMEJournal! We surveyed a huge dataset of #anaerobic #ciliates and focused on their #symbioses with #methanogenic #Archaea
Vladimir Hampl and I review the latest on the origin of mitochondria and mitochondrion-related organelles: link.springer.com/chapter/10.100…
Happy to share a new taxonomic paper by @pom55791 @DarthDaniousIM @Ivan_Cepicka !
Bit by bit toward the diversity of metopids: Description of the genus Pidimetopus n. gen. (Ciliophora: Armophorea) | Ondřej Pomahač, Daniel Méndez-Sánchez, Ivan Čepička #ciliates onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/je…
Protodays2024 are almost over and as every year full of great talks and posters! Happy to add some input from our research including talks by @polakova_kate, @MajdaPavlatova , Marek Valt and Matyáš Soviš #Protodays #Protodays2024

Finishing the first day of #Protodays with a poster session including posters of Aneta and Martina from our lab! Thanks to the organizers for making a great conference👏👏👏 #Protodays2024

53rd Jírovec´s Protozoological Days just started! Great opening symposium about viruses in protistology sponsored by @protistologists including talks by @dinokaryon, Christopher Bellas, Pavel Plevka, Matthias Fischer, and Anna Koslová. Stay tuned! #Protodays #Protodays2024

Check out some stunning Czech ciliates in our new paper about a scuticociliate species Loxocephalus luridus. Finally adding some molecular data for the type genus of the problematic order Loxocephalida! doi.org/10.1111/jeu.13…
Check out our new paper by Kotyk et al. about peculiar endobiotic ciliates from the hindgut of wood-eating cockroaches: Clevelandellidae

Happy to see some of our work in the list of the most interesting newly described #microbial #eukaryotes of 2023! Thanks Lukáš V.F Novák for mentioning many of our beloved #anaerobic #protists. Let´s see what new discoveries the upcoming year will bring!

#Protists double animal's biomass on earth. Despite their importance, our knowledge of these organisms is greatly hampered by the limited number of stable laboratory cultures. Read our call to action "The protist cultural renaissance" in @TrendsMicrobiol sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
Novel Metopid "Castula specialis" was described with help of our lab members @pom55791 @DarthDaniousIM @Ivan_Cepicka Congratulations guys! Read more here: doi.org/10.1111/jeu.13…
Anaeramoeba are really amazing protists. In the latest paper "Massive intein content in Anaeramoeba reveals aspects of intein mobility in eukaryotes" with @Ivan_Cepicka as coauthor you can read about the most intein-rich eukaryotic genomes so far. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…
Our PhD student Marek Valt working with the new JEM-F200 TEM during Transmission Electron Microscopy in Life Sciences course. Great piece of technology! 🔬 Thanks to @CzechAcademy @imgprague @LeicaMicro @JEOLEUROPE
