Care, Not Control
@CareNotControl
Remember this: we are working to build a new world where every young person has a chance to thrive. This new world is invested in care, rather than control.
"For those of you who fight for us, I thank you with every ounce of my spirit. I applaud your service to our plight and hope you are successful with helping us become free one day."
Over the years, S has mentored countless young men at his prison, hoping they can learn from his mistakes and end up on a path to success and prosperity. He is also a certified paralegal, life coach, published author, and passionate advocate for juvenile justice.
This is devastating. It will cause immense harm and make communities less safe. We know that youth justice programs like these benefit everyone. We condemn this cut to critical funds. imprintnews.org/justice/juveni…

Studies suggest that youth of color, LGBTQ youth, gender-non-conforming youth, and youth with disabilities are more likely to be placed in solitary confinement — which administrators sometimes justify as necessary “for their own protection,” or
Although federal law prohibits sexual violence against incarcerated youth and adults, children still remain at risk of sexual assault in both juvenile and adult facilities.
Harsh conditions or practices in youth prisons interfere with normal child development, traumatize youth, exacerbate physical and emotional disabilities and cause serious life-long health problems.
There is no evidence demonstrating that these practices reduce violence in youth facilities; in fact, research shows that they often make things worse. If parents treated their own kids this way, we would call it child abuse. vera.org/publications/s…

S has been incarcerated since he was 16. He recently celebrated his 41st birthday. Despite the isolation of a life-in-prison sentence, S has found a purpose and renewed sense of hope by creating a better and safer world from behind prison walls.
The #LakenRileyAct will inflict grave harm on undocumented children and youth. We know it will lead to the detention of children in dangerous facilities, even without them being convicted of a crime. There are many ways this could impact youth. A thread… 1/5
In Allegheny County, another child/adolescent was granted decertification today in Judge Beemer's court room. That makes 5 since August. This is good. #LetsWatchCourt @CareNotControl @YASP2
