History Thru Cards
@CardboardHistry
Highlighting the history of the National Pastime through baseball cards from my collection. Honoring the game, the art & our youth via the greatest hobby ever.
THIS is the baseball of my youth. #PureArt 🖼

Happy 76th to #TheMadHungarian! His nickname & antics were legendary almost to the point of overshadowing a rock solid career: NL saves leader in ‘75, career 64-35 w/ 3.10 ERA & 97 Saves. If you’re ~ my age, you certainly impersonated Al’s famous pre-pitch spin w/ glove smack! 🇭🇺

#OTD 1988, this #Yankees hurler makes 3 errors on 1 play (bobbled ball allows batter to 1st; 2 bad throws allow extra bases). HOWEVER, I always like to point out the should-be #HOFer got the W giving up just 3 runs on 8 IP to get to 8-3 on the yr. Watch👇🏻 youtu.be/bub07gwRgzY?si…

#OTD 1959, Castro supporters halt I’national Lg game b/n Rochester & Havana #SugarKings w/ gunshots from grandstand. A coach & player suffer minor flesh wounds. Havana cancels homestand & eventually relocates to Newark for ‘60 season. This ‘57 #Topps card shows Havana’s ballpark.

I always think of my Mom when I see this ‘79 #Topps Mark Lee. Not because she was a #Padres fan or a Lee fan, but because she wore the exact same glasses. 😎 #MomWoreItBetter

Happy 68th to this way too often overlooked #BlueJays workhorse of the ‘80s. The 7x All⭐️ didn’t compile HOF career totals, but he strung together some Hall-worthy seasons leading AL in WAR 3 consecutive yrs (‘82-84) followed by an ERA 👑 in ‘85. Definitely on my All ‘80s staff!

One of the worst #Yankees trades in my life. Willie was 22 & had hit .322 in AA when NY dealt him to #Cardinals on 10/21/81 for this 23-26 4.65 ERA reliever showing no signs of blossoming (37 IP 4.58 ERA in ‘81). Willie started for StL in ‘82; Sykes never made another MLB app.

This #Pirates SS broke into MLB w/ quite a splash! In his age 21-24 seasons, #Arky avg’d .340 BA, .440 OB%, 33 2Bs, 13 3Bs, 107 Rs, 92 RBIs & 157 OPS+. The ‘35 NL batting champ (.385!) posted highest NL WAR 3 of those 4 yrs.🔥

#Yogi swung at pitches from his head to his feet, so #Yankees coaches gave him lots of instructions. After 1 frustrating AB, Berra yelled, “I can’t think & hit at the same time!” His instincts were enough: 3x #MVP avg’d .294 w/ 24 HRs, 23 SOs & 100 RBIs 1st 10 yrs as a starter!🔥
