Today starts training for the JFK 50! I had a great experience last year, so I am doing it again. No specific time goal as I try to balance training and a chaotic schedule. I am hoping to improve. Get ready for the ups, downs, and learning moments over the next 5 months!

Joe Byerly and I sat down at USASOC CAPEX a few months ago to catch up. This one covers a few random topics. One highlight is why I love being a Sergeant Major and the importance of helping other people succeed. open.spotify.com/episode/21IBR9…
The past 2 months have been more chaotic than usual. That isn't necessarily good or bad. It does mean that making time for me is important. This week is busy with travel. But I found time this morning to run intervals on one of my favorite routes. Now off to the airport.....

Happy 4th of July! I started the day with a nice, easy run in the sun and heat. I monitor heart rate when running on hotter days, but I also know that the only way to adapt is to get out there! Do something to make yourself better today. Then celebrate!

Thomas Baird and I made a quick trip to Ft Hood this week. In about 60 hours, we did PT with NCOs, an LPD, a few mentorship sessions, and partied at the MI Ball. I also made time to visit 15th MI BN, where I served as BN CSM, and visited with friends who retired in the area.

I love my workouts. That doesn't mean that I am motivated every day. Today, I really wanted to go back to bed. Discipline takes over when motivation fails. I was in the gym at my normal time. And I feel better for it. I even increased weight on my power clean.

Every WWII Vet I meet is incredibly humble. What they did was absolutely heroic. John Siewert tells his story aboard the USS SATTERLEE in his memoir. This is also about the life before and after. I wish I knew John for more than a day; I could have heard him tell these stories.

Last evening, I marched in a parade to celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States Army. The streets of the capital were packed with Americans cheering for their Army. It was a proud moment to be a Soldier.

The USASOC over 40 squad finished 5th in the Army Fitness competition. They didn't spend months training. They earn it everyday! This is ARSOF and we are busy telling our story on the National Mall. #Army250

Happy 250th birthday to the US Army! I never expected this to be more than a 4 year enlistment. Today, I am almost 30 years in and here in the nation's capital to celebrate #Army250. ARSOF is showcasing our capabilities and recruiting the next generation!

I agreed to let @StorytellerSBM follow me around for 3 days. I might regret this! If you are in DC, come say hello!

Lew served as an ambulance driver in North Africa and Italy. Lew served again in Korea. He earned a medical degree and was an Orthopedic Surgeon. Lew retired from the Army National Guard after serving as the Commander of a Field Hospital in Desert Storm!

A morning run towards Utah Beach is quiet time to contemplate what this week is about. The men who fought here fought for an ideal. They believed in freedom - not for themselves, but as a principle. Never forget what they sacrificed to ensure that ideal remains alive today.

Travel, no sleep, lots of walking around Paris. Great food and wine. This is what happens when I have one day of leave.
