As Chief Executive of John Lyon’s Charity, I provide strategic leadership for long term management of the Charity’s endowment and the direction of grant giving.
"Nor should the John Lyon’s Charity be claiming that having to pay for their own lawyers’ legal costs, rather than dumping them on hapless leaseholders, is wrong." We are not challenging that. Other freeholders are challenging the costs recovery position, but not us.
At RCoJ for final day on Leasehold Reform. The 2 Govt lawyers following Sir James are dreadful and digging a hole for themselves. They don’t understand the points they are making or the numbers they are quoting. Undoing Sir James’ fine work…he doesn’t look happy ….
We created real change through The Excluded Initiative, reducing school exclusions by focussing on inclusive education. Hundreds of vulnerable kids across high-exclusion schools were supported through bespoke provision. Read the full report here: lnkd.in/guvEz4ja
8. Thank you again for sharing your perspective. I welcome continued dialogue, and I truly hope you can understand the nuance of our position, even if we don’t agree on every point.
7. It is not an easy position for us. It’s complex, difficult to explain in headlines, and not something we entered into lightly. But we must act in the best interests of the thousands of CYP who rely on our funding. We wouldn’t be fulfilling charitable duty if we didn’t try
6. You are right that charities must act ethically and with integrity. That’s why we feel a duty to raise our voice. We don’t place blame on leaseholders. But, as the law stands, Crown Estate, National Trust, have exemptions, while a children’s charity like ours has not.
5. The properties concerned are part of a specific corner of St John’s Wood, endowed to us for charitable work. If this legislation proceeds without amendment, our income will be reduced, meaning less funding for youth mental health services, school holiday programmes, and more
4. We fully appreciate how complex and emotive this issue is. We understand why people feel strongly. But our position is rooted in one clear priority: to protect the vital work we fund for children and young people across North and West London.
3. However: we are asking for an exemption based solely on our charitable status and the nature of our endowment. We are not seeking to block or derail reform. We began this process back in 2018. well before others with far greater resources joined the action.
2. We want to be clear: John Lyon’s Charity supports leasehold reform. We agree the system needs to be fairer and more transparent, and we are not opposed to the principles behind the LFRA 2024. In fact, we have been engaging with government on this issue for many years.
1. Thank you for taking the time to write and share your thoughts with us. We genuinely value feedback from those who care deeply about fairness, the charity sector, and the communities we all strive to serve.
Please watch our video which explains why we are arguing for an exemption from Leasehold Reform
The potential loss for John Lyon's Charity is £1.4M annually, which will impact more than 30 of its organisations and over 10,000 children and young people in North and West London. 📽️ Watch the video below and hear firsthand why this matters. @CEOofJLC @helloadventure1
John Lyon's Charity is not a rogue or unscrupulous freeholder. We use the income from enfranchisement claims to fund essential work with children and young people in London. We need an exemption or compensation from the LFRA 24.
