🚨I'm planning a Spring '26 pilgrimage to Harvard Film Archive to see a few of these movies and to hear Hong and Kim talk about their work🚨
The program starts August 15 (just in time for the theatrical opening of Hong's latest, BY THE STREAM, at @filmlinc in NYC on Aug 8). And a surprise! Hong and Kim Minhee will be in person at Harvard for the program's fourth and final chapter in Spring 2026.
oh my god 😍
After a bit of vacillation, my next music book will be on Schubert's sonatas and song cycles. Will hopefully begin work in the second half of next year for publication in 2028 to mark the bicentenary of his death. Really excited to write about these enchanting, elusive works.
these Renoir revisits have seriously changed my life. THE DIARY OF A CHAMBERMAID and, most recently, THE RIVER now appear to me to be fully activated masterpieces—they felt minor to me up until now—each moment from each film tuned into reverberating contradiction.
Adam Phillips is so good at writing about psychoanalysis: "To assume that there is an unconscious is to believe that there really are other people, other voices, inside and outside oneself (that if there is a mind it has minds of its own)."
re: Venice, I’m most excited about the new Kent Jones and the new Shu Qi.

Isn’t Ibsen’s own work Ibsen stripped down to its emotional essentials but also much more? This is such nonsense omg.
