Today in 1963, The Beach Boys released their single “Surfer Girl.” Written and sung by Brian, it was also the first Beach Boys record to have Brian officially credited as producer. Brian’s first original composition, it reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Unreleased harmonies recorded for Brian’s 1988 solo debut album, Brian Wilson, released July 12, 1988. “It was my first official solo album, even though Pet Sounds came together like a solo record."
Yesterday in Los Angeles, a ceremony was held at Westwood United Methodist Church, where Brian’s family and friends gathered to honor his life. The celebration continued at The Beverly Hills Hotel -memories were shared by many – with tributes from Mike Love and Al Jardine.

Today in 2002, Capitol Records released The Beach Boys compilation, Classics selected by Brian Wilson. Brian put the track list together himself that February, and included a new recording of the unreleased 1970s track, “California Feelin’” recorded with his live band.

Today in 1988, Brian released “Love and Mercy,” from his album Brian Wilson. “I would think love is a gentle thing and mercy would be more desperate, ultimately a more desperately needed thing in life. Mercy – a little break here and there for somebody who’s having trouble.”


Yesterday in 1970, The Beach Boys released “Slip On Through” from their Sunflower album.Said Brian: “It was a really dynamic song. Dennis, I was very proud of, because he really rocked and rolled on that one. Dennis did really interesting energetic things on that.”
