In a lot of ways the current Democratic leadership is similar to the Northern Doughface Democrats before the Civil War. All they know how to do is capitulate, because they don't really want conflict.
I do think it’s interesting that it wasn’t Joe Manchin or Sinema that reinvigorated, the national blue dogs. People like Golden, Perez and now Cooke either supported Bernie in 2016 or gladly accept being in his coalition.
At the same time, centrists have shifted their interests away from whatever candidate seems the smartest at the moment (Obama/Hillary/Warren/etc.) and towards the Blue Dog candidates. Not coincidentally, those candidates also follow a lot of the Bernie left playbook.

If the next Democrat majority can't agree to any kind of Keynesian project, then it has to commit to some kind of early 20th century civil service reform. You can't let 4-5 members of your caucus just stop your Presidency, you need a flexible agenda.
