I am very excited to announce that I will be joining @VCU_Liver following my graduation from Transplant Hepatology fellowship. As someone who loves caring for patients with liver disease, teaching, and researching the best organ ever, I cannot think of a better place to be! 🎉🤩
.@ArunJSanyalVCU: This recognition of our high-quality GI-Hep program as one with tremendous academic research performance reflects the wide-ranging expertise of our dedicated faculty and staff, who make the science in our program possible. bit.ly/4nhaJFf #livertwitter
First IRB-approved before my start date at @VCU_Liver! Happy and grateful to hit the ground running at this amazing institution! 🙏 @juanpabloarab
Such an important topic. 👉👈Many point fingers re: who is responsible for managing mental health in liver disease, with hepatology uncomfortable w/ mental health and psychiatry uncomfortable w/ CLD. Result: Our patients get left behind. ✅ SSRIs are safe and first-line
Depression and anxiety affect nearly 1️⃣ of 2️⃣ patients with liver disease, yet often go unaddressed... 😫 Our latest editorial in @HepCommJournal calls on hepatologists to screen 🔎 and support the emotional burden in #cirrhosis, with pragmatic tools from recent studies 🛠️…
Do other mothers encourage their 7 year olds to be expeditious by telling them: “You don’t want to be the rate-limiting step” ❔
If you're looking for a world-renowned GI fellowship program, listen/watch @ArunJSanyalVCU discuss the VCU program: No. 9 worldwide, No. 4 in the U.S. and No. 1 in the South. See what we're about. bit.ly/4lWbZfh
Happy someone did this study. 👉Most GIs do prescribe PPI ppx after banding I used to, too. The evidence does not support this, with PPIs associated with all sorts of badness in cirrhosis. 🛑Non-indicated PPIs in cirrhosis! x.com/BlaneyMD/statu…
PPI after variceal banding does nothing good, in this study that confirms my bias
I think this was/is me. Though having some patience is certainly good, too…
Patience is not always a virtue. Impatience is fuel for taking initiative. Being content to wait can make people reactive. A distaste for delays motivates them to be proactive. "Restless" kids often grow up to become resourceful adults.
A friend of mine in medical school coined the phrase “evidence-based outrage”. Over the last few years and months, I have developed alot of evidence-based outrage.
Injectable naltrexone should be available to patients at hospital discharge and in clinic for our patients with ALD and AUD. Pro tip: prescribe a few naltrexone PO for the end of the month when naltrexone injectable begins to wear off

✅ 7 years of Medical Training Thank you to my patients for trusting me and allowing me care for and learn from you Thank you to my co-trainees and faculty for the many lessons and being by my side Thank you to my husband and son (now 7!) for loving me (and sharing most of me)

Tides turning
Great to see this in @JHospMedicine @SocietyHospMed Offer naltrexone to patients with cirrhosis and etoh use disorder!!
VCU so lucky to land Dr Blaney Congratulations to everyone. How is VCU landing all these awesome people? Is it the force? Or … the dark side????

The most enduring marker of success isn't wealth, fame, or power. It’s what we create and contribute to others. In the short run, status symbols capture attention. In the long run, achievement is judged by impact. The highest accomplishment is improving the lives of others.
Just gave an engaging talk on treating AUD in patients w/ alcohol-associated digestive disease to the University of Rwanda 🌟GI fellows. I learned stigma for AUD & mental health is universal. 👉This next generation of global GIs/Hepatologists is the change we need to improve 📉
Some of you know I have started a patient-forward #MedEd social media account. Just getting started with 166 followers, all of whom I know. Pretty sure “Big Wellness” had my post removed for dispelling misinformation! Me, a doctor making 85k/year in DC… @theliverdr @SecKennedy

Me: “I’m doing way too many peer reviews. I need to start declining” Also me: “Oh, this looks really interesting!” …Accepts 3 more peer reviews in the same 24 hour period where I was going to stop/slow doing peer review
