On this day in 2002: Scotland's first National Park was established. Loch Lomond and The Trossachs covers 720 miles and it is the fourth-largest national park in the British Isles. At its heart is the iconic Loch Lomond, Scotland's largest loch by surface area.

Happy 50th birthday to actress Laura Fraser who was born in Glasgow. She has appeared in numerous films and TV shows over the years, but is perhaps best known for role as Lydia in the final season of classic show Breaking Bad. Have a belter Laura 🥳

On this day in 1801: The first ever Burns Night took place. It was held by Robert Burns' friends at Burns Cottage in Alloway (now a museum). They celebrated his life, ate haggis and quoted his work, on the fifth anniversary of his death.

Happy birthday to violinist Nicola Benedetti who was born on this day in West Kilbride in 1987. She shot to fame at 16, winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year. In 2022, she became Edinburgh Festival Director, the first Scottish female to have the role since it began in 1947.

On This Day in 1946: the unique spelling of Irn Bru was born. The drink, first made in 1901, had previously been called Strachan's Brew then Iron Brew. New advertising legislation required the removal of the word 'brew', because it is not brewed. Which can's your favourite?

On this day in 1274: Robert The Bruce was born in Turnberry Castle. In 1306 he was crowned King of Scots at Scone. After the death of William Wallace, he led the campaign to regain Scottish independence, culminating in his victory at the Battle of Bannockburn in June 1314.

Much-loved childrens TV presenter Glen Michael has died at the age of 99. Who remembers watching him every Sunday on STV? With his wee dug and his talking lamp Paladin. His ‘Cartoon Cavalcade’ was a godsend for kids when we had a tiny amount of TV channels.
