BMA says planned strike by resident doctors in England will go ahead. The strike is set to last 5 days from Friday. The announcement follows talks with the government which began last Thursday. BMA says govt has not come up with an offer to avert strikes. Sent from my iPhone
BMA argument is that getting hospitals to run non-urgent planned care on strike days will stretch safe staffing too thinly - consultants can’t safely provide elective care and cover resident doctors. NHS England argues that unnecessary postponements risk patient safety.
BMA has warned that arrangements for the strike in England due to begin on Friday will put patients at risk. The BMA said previously NHS England had advised hospitals to postpone non urgent care. The union said this time NHS leaders wanted planned treatment to go ahead.

It’s understood that talks between government officials and BMA representatives over resident doctors’ pay in England will continue over next few days including the weekend. Depending on progress a formal meeting with the Health Secretary will be convened, possibly on Monday
