On June 2, 2025, Sergeant of the Guard Sgt. 1st Class Andrew Jay took his final walk as a Tomb Guard at Arlington National Cemetery. In a powerful farewell, he laid roses at each crypt of the Unknown Soldiers, then walked off the plaza hand in hand with his 8-year-old son, Finn.

Maj. Gen. Andre W. Brewster (Section 2), one of over 400 Medal of Honor Recipients buried at ANC, received the military’s highest award for valor for actions in China on July 13, 1900. Throughout his Army career, Brewster exemplified the Army’s ideals of bravery and teamwork.

Morning light breaks at Arlington National Cemetery, bringing moments of remembrance to these hallowed grounds.
Today, we honor U.S. Army Capt. Maria Ines Ortiz, who was killed during a mortar attack in Baghdad on July 10, 2007. Her death marked the first loss of an Army nurse in combat since the Vietnam War. Capt. Ortiz is laid to rest in Section 60. We honor her service.
