Very sorry to hear this. Not sure we ever met, but without him there’d have been no CAR when I was a kid, a golden thread of happiness that helped sustain me through childhood and the single greatest influence on my working life.
I owe my career to Ian Fraser. He took me into the CAR gang and allowed me to learn from himself and Mel Nichols, the best mentors you could have. He never interfered editorially (he enjoyed the money-sapping spats we had with advertisers) and of course he was a fabulous writer
200 miles from dawn, then on feet all day judging Festival of the Unexceptional, then 200 miles home. Barely noticed it. What a big, beautiful, brilliant beast this current Range Rover is.
