ok, I'd like to know how weird am I re: this--does anyone else out there observe a norm where you can't give a knife as a gift but have to sell the knife to the person for e.g. one penny?

If you're weird, you can still be offended, but you understand that your patterns of offense are atypical, & so you're not meta-offended by the fact that people didn't make enough efforts to avoid offending you. And most of the vehemence of offense comes from meta-offense.
