And its done! The Little Book of Aliens. Everything you need to know about everything there is to know about life in the Universe (out there and, you know, maybe but probably not, here). This week's @bigthink post #Arewealone bigthink.com/13-8/little-bo…
Here is a great article about the dangers of thinking of the brain in terms of an information system. We are actually working on theories of semantic information and life but I find papers like this useful in keeping one's feet to the fire. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/th…

Amid all the difficulties the country faces, the losses in space science might seem trivial. But American science, including space science, has paid enormous dividends in keeping the nation strong, prosperous, and worthy of the world’s respect.
Within a few decades, humans might finally gather some hard data that can answer its most profound, existential question: Is there life beyond Earth? But because of Trump's cuts to space science, NASA might not power this discovery, @AdamFrank4 writes: theatlantic.com/science/archiv…

"Eventually, the first-person, embodied experience of being hot or feeling cold was pushed aside as a phantom epiphenomenon, while abstracted quantities like temperature, became more real. This amnesia of experience is science’s blind spot." noemamag.com/why-science-ha…

Levin is quite clear that he is extending the meaning of machine beyond the reductionist metaphysics I am talking about. That's what makes his work so interesting.

The brain being a computer is an analogy, a metaphor and the age-old linking of whatever technology is currently dominant to describe the Mind. That's what has no empirical support.

The central point Our discussion of consciousness has a fatal flaw. It’s a mistake built into the foundations of how science is perceived and conducted across disciplines. This includes the hype around artificial intelligence. @NoemaMag noemamag.com/why-science-ha…
Physicalism requires a framework that already depends on the life-world (a'la Husserl). You already have to be embedded in the unitary holism of experience to conceive -downstream - of the "physical". Thus you can not start with physicalism. Also Hempel's Dilemma...
None of this invalidates the essence of physicalism - which is that at the end of the day, what's physical does not change depending on the description of higher level systems
Thanks. I would argue that the categories used to parse this problem historically fail to capture the direction we want to explore. In the end what's required is a new vision of Nature itself (one that always has us in it).
Great piece! I really enjoyed it! It seems like your view is not materialist or idealist/panpsychism. Would it then be fair to say your view is a kind of naturalistic dualism or does it not fit into any category completely?

Going to spend sometime this week posting about the core idea in my recent @NoemaMag article about science and its approach to consciousness. Starting with Physics is the wrong way to go. Here is a link to the piece. noemamag.com/why-science-ha…

This one of the greatest exchanges ever. Most nations don't have 1000 year legacies. The names of the leaders are all forgotten. For the US it will be the science we've done that gets recalled millennia from now. That is how the deeds of the nation will endure.
As Robert Wilson said, it is what makes America worth defending.
