Protestors from the Jewish Defense League burn Confederate and Nazi flags to protest an arson attempt against a Reno, Nevada synagogue. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) criticizes the move and says that it is not constructive to burn any kind of flag.


The Hooters restaurant chain is ordered to pay $275,000 to Sarah Steinhoff, who claimed to be the target of unwanted sexual harassment while working as a waitress in Newport, Kentucky in 1996 and 1997.

Roberto Suárez Gómez, drug lord and trafficker who was a major supplier of cocaine to Colombia, dies in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. He was 68. Gómez served as the inspiration for character Alejandro Sosa in 1983 American crime film Scarface.

Rioting breaks out in Brixton (South London) following the fatal shooting of Derek Bennett, a 29-year-old black man, by police. 27 people are arrested.
