Since today is the start of Black History Month, here's a map of the black population of the United States by County. You can definitely spot the outline of the southern "black belt" here that stretches from Louisiana and Arkansas to Virginia.

In case you needed a laugh today, here's a map of the initial target list for House Republicans in 2018. They set a lofty goal of flipping 36 seats, but only ended up winning two of these. They lost the majority of these by over 10 points by the time the 2018 blue wave happened.

Like most Western North Carolina counties other than Buncombe, Madison County has been red on a presidential level for ~20 years. Nonetheless, Sheriff Buddy Harwood (D) — who made national news for equipping cops in schools with AK-47s — won re-election with nearly 70% in 2022.
UPDATE: In the first campaign finance reports out after the Virginia primary, the Republican nominee in #HD21 (the closest Democratic-won district in 2023) has raised... $117 Not a typo! A Republican nominee in a Harris+6 district only raised $117! x.com/Uncrewed/statu…
Republicans in #HD21, which had the closest Democratic margin of victory in 2023, appear to have nominated a guy with no campaign infrastructure online and only has a little over $100 on hand for a November campaign. x.com/ChazNuttycombe…
Last week, Illinois Republican State Senator Don DeWitte surprised a lot of people when he announced his retirement from #SD33 in western Chicagoland. He won uncontested in 2022, but his district backed Harris by 2 last year. It'll now be a top target for the Dems next year.

Thanks to court-ordered redistricting, the following Mississippi legislative districts will be up in special elections in November. Dems are targeting three Harrris/R districts (SD-02, SD-45, & HD-22), while both Dem incumbents in Trump districts (SD-34 & HD-16) are uncontested!

The legendary Mario Cuomo won his last term as Governor of New York in 1990 in a pretty weird way. Cuomo ended up only receiving 53%, but conservatives balked at the GOP's nominee's pro-choice views, leading to a near-even split between the GOP and the Conservative Party!

Democratic Presidential candidates haven't won a county in West Virginia since 2008 and the only county that was even close last year was Monongalia County. Containing the city of Morgantown (home to West Virginia University), Trump won here by just four points.

Whitman County, Washington has become a rare Democratic bastion in the eastern part of the state. Containing the college town of Pullman, this county voted for Romney in 2012, but flipped to Clinton in 2016. It's gotten bluer since then, with Harris winning it by 9 last year.

BIG retirement in the Illinois Senate. DeWitte represents a Harris+2 district that’ll now be a huge target for Illinois Democrats next year.
BREAKING: Sen. Don DeWitte (R-St. Charles) will not seek re-election next year, he announces. Was a top vulnerable target for Dems next year.
The closest Democratic win in the Illinois State House last year came in #HD76, which stretches from heavily white working class LaSalle County to the college town of DeKalb. Democrat Amy "Murri" Briel won this Harris+6 district by one percent, almost entirely thanks to DeKalb!

Just to put this into perspective if Mendoza doesn't run for re-election, there will be open elections in: US Senate IL-02 IL-07 (if Davis retires) IL-08 IL-09 State Comptroller Again, have mercy on Chicago televisions for primary season. x.com/brendenmoore13…
Inbox: Comptroller Susana Mendoza will announce tomorrow whether she'll seek a fourth term as Illinois' chief fiscal officer. Many expect her to forgo reelection in order to focus on a run for mayor of Chicago in 2027. She's said she'll run for one or the other but not both.
