Senator Tim Kaine
@SenTimKaine
Official account of U.S. Senator Tim Kaine.
Virginia’s institutions of higher learning must remain places of academic freedom, critical thinking and open dialogue. The last thing we need is a deeply unpopular administration undermining one of the key factors in our success. My latest w/ @MarkWarner for @RTDNEWS:…
First, Republicans blocked an amendment to protect funding that saves lives after natural disasters. Then, they blocked two more to protect first responders, law enforcement, and tribal communities from being impacted by public broadcasting cuts. What's next?
I’m gearing up for a long night fighting the GOP agenda to cut funding for public broadcasting—which are especially important to our rural communities—faith-based organizations helping resettle refugees, and a whole lot more.

My statement with @MarkWarner on the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office finding that President Trump and congressional Republicans’ megabill will add more than $4 trillion to the deficit over the next ten years:

I asked a Trump health appointee if he believes in Long COVID. Couldn’t get a direct answer. I asked if he’d recommend the COVID vaccine. Couldn’t get a direct answer. Let’s set the record straight: Long COVID is real and vaccines work. Claiming otherwise is dangerous.
102 years ago, the Equal Rights Amendment was first proposed to enshrine equal protection for women in the Constitution. In 2020, VA became the last state needed to ratify it, but an arbitrary time limit for ratification prevented that from happening. Let's finally get it done.
Thank you to the Richmond NAACP, Urban League of Greater Richmond, SCLC, and others who came out last Saturday in Richmond to discuss President Trump and Republicans’ “Big, Ugly Bill,” which will kick people off their health insurance and cut SNAP. I will keep working to stand up…

Trump promised to lower prices. But he’s doing the opposite, because we all know uncertainty is bad for our economy—and months of Trump’s economic chaos are causing prices to go up and businesses to lay off workers. This has to stop.
President Trump is destroying the Department of Education by laying off staffers at a record number, defunding youth mental health services, slashing before- and after-school programs, meddling in Virginia's universities, and more. Our students—and economy—will pay the price.
A strong State Department workforce is critical to our national security. So why is Trump slashing the State Department while Russia and China are going into overdrive to expand their influence around the world?
The American public needs answers. President Trump needs to release the Epstein files.
This week, I met with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to discuss how the Trump Administration withholding $108 million in education funding from VA threatens their ability to continue providing academic and career programs to young people. I'll keep pushing to restore funding.

My statement on the Trump Administration’s illegal withholding of $140 million in federal funding passed by Congress to support fentanyl overdose response efforts:

My statement with @MarkWarner after Senate Republicans voted to rescind federal funding for public broadcasting and national security programs, which had previously been appropriated by a bipartisan majority in Congress:

Republicans are trying to ram through their bill to rubberstamp DOGE cuts. I proposed an amendment to protect funding for faith-based organizations that resettle refugees, feed the hungry, and more to support the most vulnerable people around the world. Republicans blocked it.
We just got new numbers on inflation: The price of food is up. The price of household supplies is up. The price of appliances is up. The price of clothing is up. The price of toys is up. Working families can't afford President Trump's policies.
Just so we’re all up to speed: the Republican policy agenda for 2025 is... 📻 Defund Sesame Street & rural radio 🏥 Kick millions off their health care 🍽️ Rip food away from hungry kids 🛥️ Tax cuts for billionaires I'm voting NO on their DOGE cuts, and so should every Senator.

For the 2nd time this week, I asked a Trump-appointed official—this time the Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources—why the U.S. is letting children starve rather than distribute already-purchased food. Yet again, they had no answer. The U.S. must do better.
Yes or no: If the U.S. has ALREADY purchased specialty foods to keep kids from starving to death, should we deliver that food to dying kids or allow it to spoil, and destroy it? It’s a simple question, but the Trump Administration can’t answer it. Disgusting.
